                                                                             REMEMBRANCE OBSERVANCE
                                                                                    ORDER OF SERVICE
                                                                                     11 NOVEMBER  200_

Dear Students:  Please remember that this is an act of prayer and worship in honour of our war dead.
Please respect the occasion and refrain from any applause or cheers.

INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  by the MC

WELCOME:  by the Head/Principal.

PROLOGUE:  from, THE FUNERAL ORATION OF PERICLES (c.429 B.C.), read by

But each one, man for man, has won imperishable praise, each one has gained a glorious grave--
not that sepulchre of earth wherein they lie, but the living tomb of everlasting remembrance
   wherein their glory is enshrined. For the whole earth is the sepulchre of heroes;
monuments may rise and tablets be set up to them in their own land,
   but on the far-off shores there is an abiding memorial that no pen or chisel has traced;
it is graven, not on stone or brass, but on the living heart of humanity.
   Take these men for your example. Like them, remember that prosperity can be only for the free;
that freedom is the sure possession of those alone who have the courage to defend it.

THE ENTRANCE OF THE COLOURS
Please stand while the cadet Flag Party carries in the Colours.

THE NATIONAL ANTHEM:  O CANADA

O Canada, our home and native land, True Patriot Love in all Thy Son's Command.
With glowing hearts we see Thee rise, The True North Strong and Free.
From far and wide, O Canada, We stand on guard for Thee.
God keep our Land, Glorious and Free, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

THE LAYING OF THE WREATH
The Principal/Head and Head of Prefects/Student Council, accompanied by a cadet
shall lay a wreath of remembrance at the Altar on behalf of the whole community.

During the laying of the wreath the following hymn shall be sung:

HYMN:  O GOD OUR HELP IN AGES PAST

1. O God our help in ages past 2. Under the shadow of thy throne
Our hope for years to come.  Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Our shelter from the stormy blast. Sufficient is thine arm alone,
And our Eternal Home.  And our defence is sure.

3. Before the hills in order stood, 4. A thousand ages in thy sight
Or earth received her frame  Are like an evening gone
From everlasting thou art God Short as the watch that ends the night
To endless years the same  Before the rising sun.

5. Time, like an ever-rolling stream 6. O God our help in ages past,
Bears all its sons away;  Our hope for years to come,
They fly forgotten, as a dream Be thou our guard while troubles last
Dies at the opening day.  And our eternal home.

OPENING PRAYER:  By the chaplain.

PLEASE BE SEATED.

FIRST READING:  A reading from the book of Ecclesiasticus, read by

HYMN:  I VOW TO THEE MY COUNTRY  The School Choir

1. I vow to thee my country  2. And there's another country
all earthly things above.  I've heard of long ago,
Entire and whole and perfect,  Most dear to them that love her,
The service of my love.  Most great to them that know.
The love that asks no question, We may not count her armies
The love that stands the test,  We may not see her King.
That lays upon the altar,  Her fortress is a faithful heart,
the dearest and the best.  Her pride is suffering.
The love that never falters,  And soul by soul and silently
The love that pays the price.  Her shining bounds increase.
The love that lays undaunted,  And her ways are ways of gentleness
the final sacrifice.   And all her paths are peace.  Amen.

SECOND READING:  A reading from the Gospel according to St. Matthew

Hymn “SOLDIER” sung by the Choir

When you are a soldier, I will be your shield
And I will go with you into the battlefield
And when the arrows start to fly, take my hand and hold on tight.
'Cause I will be your shield when you are a soldier, a soldier.

And I will be the one that you can cry your songs to;
And my eyes will share your tears and when you are surrounded,
The enemy is closing in.  I will fight with you to the end.

And when you're lost in darkness, I will hold the light.
And I will help you find your way through the night.
And I'll remind you of the truth, and keep the flame alive in you. And I will be your shield,
yes, I will be your shield When you are a soldier, a soldier. When you are a soldier, a soldier.

DRAMATIC PRESENTATION: A  presention by the Dramatic Arts class.
The events of the heroic day at the Battle of Vimy Ridge will be recounted and relived

REFLECTION: by the Chaplain, Veteran or Teacher

IN FLANDERS FIELDS, by Lieut-Colonel John McCrae (1874-1918)
read by selected readers

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky,  The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved,
and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

PLEASE STAND FOR THE CALL TO REMEMBRANCE led by the MC

THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD AS WE WHO ARE LEFT GROW OLD.
AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN.

SILENCE

LAMENT:  THE FLOWERS OF THE FOREST (traditional Scottish)
Read by_____  and a verse played either before /and/or after  by piper if available.

I've seen the smiling, Of fortune beguiling                    I've seen the forest, Adorned the foremost,
I've tasted her pleasures, And felt her decay          Wi' flowers o' the fairest, Baith pleasant and gay.
Sweet is her blessing,                                                      Sae bonnie was their blooming,
And kind her caressing,                                                   Their scent the air perfuming.
But now they are fled                                                       But now they are
And fled far away.                                                             withered away.

I've seen the morning,                                                      O fickle fortune!
With gold hills adorning,                                                   Why this cruel sportin'?
And loud tempests storming,                                            Oh! Why thus perplex
Before parting day,                                                           Us, poor sons of a day?
I've seen Tweed's silver streams,                                     Thy frown canna fear me,
Glitt'ring in the sunny beams,                                           Thy smile canno' cheer me,
Grow drumlie and dark,                                                    Since the flowers o' the forest
As they roll'd on their way;                                               Are a' wede away.
